Fisheries-Genetics

Fisheries genetics refers to the application of genetic principles and methods to fisheries biology and management.

The Fisheries and Aquaculture team is engaged in fisheries genetics projects at a pan-European scale.

Our research interests lie in the use of genetic tools for species identification and origin assignment to promote sustainable fishing and to counter illegal activity by promoting the traceability of fish and fish products.

Our activities are concerned with:

  • The prevention of Illegal Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IUU Fishing)
  • The traceability of fish and fish product
  • The management of fish stocks
  • Aquaculture

We pursue these activities from a policy strengthening and improvement approach, through stakeholder outreach, information communication and facilitation of data access and analysis.
